August 1146. Prince Hywel has called all the bards of Wales to him for a music festival to mark the third anniversary of his rule over Ceredigion. He has invited all the lords of Wales too, including his father, his uncle, and his neighbor to the south, King Cadell. But with the highborn also come the low thieves, spies, and other hangers-on. And when a murderer strikes as the festival starts, Gareth and Gwen are charged with discovering his identity - before the death of a peasant shakes the throne of a king.

The Unlikely Spy A Gareth and Gwen Medieval Mystery Volume 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Sarah Woodbury Laurel Schroeder Books

I really enjoyed The Unlikely Spy just as much as I have enjoyed the previous Gwen and Gareth mysteries - it had all the elements that I love: a great plot that has me hanging on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out who did, right alongside Gwen, Gareth and Prince Hwyel; wonderful charactisations and dialogue engage the reader's interest; a great setting - the ordinary every day life of people living during the medieval Wales provides the back-drop for murder, mystery, intrigue - and Sarah does it so well. In this latest offing, an inconspicuous man, so ordinary, that readers can be forgiven for thinking why anybody would want him murdered, is found stabbed and left in a millpond. For Gwen, Gareth, Prince Hywel and Prince Rhun the man's murder makes no sense and their suspects remain illusive and in the wind. Our team of intrepid sluethers are left trying to pull the threads together and make sense of the truth behind the lies. Totally looking forward to reading my next Gwen and Gareth mystery.

The Unlikely Spy A Gareth and Gwen Medieval Mystery Volume 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Sarah Woodbury Laurel Schroeder Books Reviews

I really like the Gareth and Gwen Mysteries. This one was good and worth the wait. Gwen has come into her own and is recognized by her husband and others as an intelligent, thoughtful woman. This was a good mystery with enough characters, twists and turns to keep me wondering "who done it."
The book starts with a murder and takes many turns .It has several characters who are suspects with possible reason to kill but until the ending the real killer and reason for committing the crime is revealed.
I wanted to stretch this book out, but I read it in a day! These characters are now old friends to me , I love them. The only problem is, I have to wait a year for the next book! Make it January 2015, Sarah, that way I only have to wait 6months. Thank you for a wonderful series.
I am a fan of Sarah Woodbury's books and I've read every book in both her Gareth and Gwen series, as well as her After Cilmeri series. The Unlikely Spy did not disappoint. I look forward to Gareth and Gwen's next adventure, which was perfectly set up at the end of this installment.
Anyone who has been reading Gareth and Gwen up until this point will love this one just as much. I found the extra focus on Rhun to be an interesting change, but was a little disappointed that it took the place of a focus on Hywel. Big Hywel lovers may "find this wanting" in the words of Woodbury, but otherwise the unlikely spy is a wonderful installment in the series. Can't wait for the next one!!
After reading the first 4 I went to the history and found out what happened to the princes, queen and other known characters.... and it was so sad, I could not come back to this series, knowing what the future would bring them. But I did, and of course it is excellent as all the books are. This author can't write a bad book! Just don't read the history; you'll want to go back in time and poison a certain conniving queen.
Woodbury is a fine author, and she weaves a complex and intriguing tale here. While the basic cast of characters remains stable, there are a couple of changes first, Gwen's role is modified as she is now a mother to young Tangwen; second, Rhun moves to a much more central role in this investigation, giving Hywel and Rhun an opportunity to broaden their relationship. The setting for this mystery is Hywel's chief castle in the land he received when his father, King Owain, divested it from his own brother for treasonous acts. As people and especially bards from all across Wales show up for a music festival, it seems that others are gathering for more dangerous liaisons. When murder strikes, the band of Gareth, Gwen, and Hywel must move quickly to understand the death and to find the guilty party. With fine portrayals of characters and in engaging plot, this is a great read!
