It's 1946 and Roy Doyle has just returned home from the war. But before he has time to exchange his uniform for a suit and tie, he finds himself embroiled in a case where every suspect ends up dead and every clue leads to more danger.

The Vengeance Season The Roy Doyle Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jake MacMillan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Jake MacMillan gives us a character to remember in Roy Doyle - in an LA setting just post-WWII. With wry humor and an innate ability to stay true to the lives of Roy and his brother Legs, Jake winds us around his little finger with the many entanglements: with the LA Police, shady types lurking here and there, fascinating dames. The solution to this mystery is just half the fun; the rest is just good reading from an excellent writer. Looking forward to the follow-on!

The Vengeance Season The Roy Doyle Mysteries Book 1 edition by Jake MacMillan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

What an easy read and a page turner. How great to read a story of quick wit without any gore. This story did not need any of that. I fell in love with the characters - even "Legs" who means well! This story has the feel of "Mike Hammer" - black and white movies - and when the pride of being an American was everywhere! Can't wait to see what Roy will do next!
I really liked the 1940's setting. I, too, felt the "film-noir" vibe. I also really liked Roy Doyle himself, a good guy trying to do the right thing. The whole premise was very refreshing.
OK, caveat I bought this one because a friend had written it. Having supported friends' writing before, I was expecting an OK read. What I got was a fast moving 'film noir' type story. It kept me reading almost continuously from start to finish, with reluctant breaks to deal with the real world. I'll be looking forward to the next installment. If you like hard boiled type detective stories, give this one a shot!
Reading "The Vengeance Season" by Jake MacMillan really takes you back back to the days of using Brylcreem on your hair, listening to the radio because there was no television, being proud because America had just won a war! The author does a great job of setting the 1946 scene for Roy Doyle's return from the war and entry into the Los Angeles job market. Roy is destined to become - by hook or by crook - the Private Investigator that his brother Legs wants him to be, and the journey only just begins in "The Vengeance Season" the author has promised us more in this series. In this introductory book, which has the feel of a black & white movie, Roy Doyle gets our attention and earns our respect. I personally love being able to read a mystery or a detective novel without cringing at (or avoiding) descriptions of the bloody gore of every minute detail of the crime scenes! Such descriptions are not to be found in "The Vengeance Season"; instead, there is saucy banter, sexual innuendo, and just enough wit in the satisfying solution to a complicated plot. Just what you want in a 1946 Private Eye story. Roy Doyle. I'm waiting for the second book in this series!

Well written, nice pacing, lots of excitement, thoughtful development of the story, enjoyable characters, great period detail...yes, I loved this book. As comforting as watching an old 1940's B&W mystery. Great mood.
I read this book while nursing my 3-month-old. It was a welcome escape from my new, nonstop life. Yes, it was easy-to-read and a page-turner (which is the only thing I can engage in at the moment) but also it was a thoughtful, internal, and nuanced take on the typical noir genre. I looked forward to reading Roy Doyle's inner thoughts and figuring out what made him tick. The mystery was compelling, and the writing was fun and witty. Highly recommended. I will be reading more of MacMillan.
This excellent PI novel written in vintage post WWII style has taut and humorous dialogue, characters that readers can relate to and enough twists, turns and action to keep any reader entertained. Read it, you'll be glad you did!
